Finance Specialist

Job Description 

Bring your financial/bookkeeping expertise to MOST Policy Initiative, a Missouri-based nonprofit committed to improving the lives of all Missourians by connecting accessible research information to nonpartisan policymaking.  

Starting off as an idea between three graduate students at the University of Missouri, MOST Policy Initiative has since grown into a trusted source of policy expertise for state lawmakers and the communities they serve.  

The Finance Specialist position is an excellent opportunity for someone with an aptitude for numbers and tracking important data to provide bookkeeping and grant management support for a small, Missouri-focused nonprofit. This is a new position that reports directly to the Executive Director. Ideal candidates will enjoy building and implementing new processes and procedures to support the financial administration of our nonprofit work.

 

Salary: $20-25/hour 

Job Type: Part-Time (15hr/week) 

Schedule: 4-5 days/week (Monday through Friday), at least 3hr/day (between 9am-5pm) 

Work Location: Jefferson City or Remote (within MO) 

 

Job Duties

Bookkeeping (via Quickbooks).

  • Review and process contract invoices.

Grant Finance Management.

  • Maintain spending records for grant portfolio.
  • Prepare regular financial summaries for open grants.
  • Prepare draft budgets for grant proposals.

Annual Budget. Support Executive Director in annual budget preparation.

Other Administrative Support.

  • Work with external HR vendor to: (1) review and submit biweekly payroll
  • Work with external benefits providers to: (1) review and submit biweekly 401k contributions
  • Oversee purchasing for team expenses (travel, office)

 

Qualifications Summary

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years experience as a financial specialist, bookkeeper or similar position, or at least 5 years experience as a financial specialist, bookkeeper or similar position. 
  • Proven experience using or learning various business, financial and project management software, including Quickbooks, Excel, ClickUp 
  • Strong attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects. 
  • Analytic and strategic thinking capabilities 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills 
  • Good ability to communicate both verbally and in writing 
  • Able to maintain confidential and sensitive data. 
  • Willingness to learn; once trained, able to perform responsibilities with general supervision.   

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing business (particularly nonprofit) accounts on Quickbooks or similar platform  

  • Nonprofit grant management experience
