On October 24, 2024, MOST Fellows Dr. Rieka Yu and Dr. Chinenye Izuegbunam, accompanied by Executive Director Robert Boone, attended the BioBash 2024 at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis. The event, themed Exploring Horizons – Diverse Careers in Science, was organized by the Committee for Scientific Training and Mentoring and served as a comprehensive career and job fair for scientists. BioBash 2024 featured a range of informative sessions, including career panels, workshops focused on essential professional tools, outreach talks, and networking mixers.
Dr. Yu was a featured speaker on the Diverse Jobs in Science career panel, joining an impressive lineup of professionals ranging from biodiversity data curators to patent scientists. She shared insights into her career journey and transition into science policy. Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Yu remarked, “I had a great time at BioBash meeting people from so many different areas of science. I especially enjoyed talking to students and discussing the challenges of school and the different career opportunities they have after graduating.”
Dr. Izuegbunam emphasized the value of the event, noting how the career panels highlighted multiple paths for early-career scientists and provided insights into the resources needed to achieve their goals. Attendees also participated in workshops such as Resume Essentials and Ace the Interview, which offered practical guidance for career development. Executive Director Boone noted, “The Danforth Center was a great place to have this event and that it was nice that this event included a networking mixer and Job Fair, in which MOST had a booth.” This networking mixer and job fair allowed MOST to connect with potential collaborators and job seekers.
Finally, BioBash 2024 proved to be an invaluable experience for scientists exploring diverse career opportunities and seeking resources to advance their professional journeys.
