From September 19th to 20th, the MOST Policy Fellows traveled to Kansas City to meet with legislators and partners. Fellows had meetings at the impressive Kansas City Library at the Plaza and Central locations and attended presentations by the Healthcare Institution for Innovations in Quality (HI IQ) at Kaufman Foundation on maternal mortality in Missouri and the Kansas City area.
Dr. Rieka Yu “was excited to see with HI IQ, a consortium of doctors and researchers working support evidence-based practices to address maternal mortality, an issue commonly discussed at the Capitol.”
“I was absolutely riveted by the presentation on maternal mortality and risk factors that was given by the [Department of Health and Senior Services] DHSS maternal mortality review board,” said Dr. Warner. “My main takeaway was that the majority of risk factors for pregnant folks in Missouri are actually external – access to care, domestic violence, insurance coverage, things of that nature.”
The Fellows made time for fun, too. They enjoyed BBQ from Slap’s and took time on Friday to check out the Nelson-Atkins Museum and play a round of mini-golf (Dr. Izuegbunam won).
